Clinton, Miss. -- The Hawks swept Mississippi College Saturday to win their first Gulf South Conference series of the year. Shorter won the opener 16-13, before earning the win in the finale 5-3.
The Hawks move to 11-5 on the season and 3-5 in conference play with the wins; while the Choctaws slip to 2-16 overall and 0-8 in the GSC.
In the opener, MC jumped out to a 6-0 lead after two innings, but from there the Hawks began chipping away; cutting the lead in half in the third as
Raul Cortes scored on a wild pitch and
Blaze Vazquez added a 2 RBI single. The Choctaws answered in the bottom of the inning for one to make it a 7-3 game. Only to have the Hawks tie the game in their next at bat on a
Ty Cherry grand slam to center field, that plated
William Winslow Isaiah Maddela and Cortes.
MC regained the lead in the fifth on a solo homerun from Kyle Smith, and made it a 10-7 game on a 2-run shot from Austin Warkentin.
In the seventh,
Patrick Sanderson cut the lead to one on a 2-run homer – his first of the year – scoring Vazquez. And, took the lead 11-10 on a single from
Jack Leech, before making it a 12-10 game when Winslow scored on a wild pitch. Leech came in one batter later as Cherry reached on an error to bring the Hawks' advantage to 13-10.
In the eighth, Shorter tacked on three more to make it a 16-10 game, on RBI singles from Cortes and Leech. MC added three runs – one in the eighth and two in the ninth – for the 16-13 final score.
Leech and Vazquez each posted multi-hit games; while Leech and Cherry finished with four RBI apiece.
Harrison Shubert earned the win, the first of his career, allowing three runs on four hits with a walk through three innings in relief.
In game two, Leech put the Hawks on the board in the third with an RBI single to right, bringing in Cortes who reached base earlier in the inning on an error. Only to have the Choctaws answer in the bottom of the inning for three runs to take the lead, 3-1.
In the fifth, Cherry tallied a 2-run single to right center to tie the game, and took the lead in the sixth, 4-3, on an RBI single from
Bailey Gerstner. Â Shorter added one final run in the seventh, on a single from
Luis Acevedo, for the 5-3 final score.
Five different Hawks' finished with a hit in the game; while Cherry added two RBI.
Jacob Ramos earned the complete game win, allowing three runs on seven hits with two walks and seven strikeouts through seven innings of work.
Shorter will look complete the series sweep Sunday afternoon. Game time is set for 2:00pm EST.
