ROME -- The Hawks cruised to a 19-0 win over Clark Atlanta Wednesday afternoon to sweep the season series with the Panthers.
Shorter improves to 16-10 on the year; while Clark Atlanta moves to 9-11 overall.
The Hawks got the scoring started in the bottom of the first; scoring three times as
Blaze Vazquez tallied an RBI double to center field, and came in on a ground out from
Luis Acevedo. Before,
William Winslow added the inning's final run on a wild pitch.
Shorter added to it in the second, with three more runs, for the 6-0 score. First, as
Hugh York scored when Winslow was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Then, as Acevedo delivered a 2-RBI single to left field to bring in Vazquez and Winslow.
Vazquez connected on his first homerun of the game to make it a 7-0 game in the fourth, before
Dustin Lawson brought in two on a base hit to left field later in the inning.
Up 9-0 in the fifth, Shorter made it 14-0 with five runs.
Raul Cortes doubled to start things off, and scored when
Bailey Gerstner followed with a single to left field. Shorter then loaded the bases and
Nate Butterworth brought in Gerstner on a sacrifice fly to left field. And, after loading the bases,
Isaiah Maddela delivered a three-run double to right field for the 14-0 score.
Shorter added two it in the sixth with three more runs on a wild pitch and a two-run homer from Vazquez to make it a 17-0 game. And, in the eighth tacked on two final runs, on a sacrifice fly from Nunez and an RBI single from Madella for the 19-0 score.
Vazquez finished 4-4 on the day with four RBI and five runs scored, reaching base in all five of his at-bats as he was hit by a pitch, as well. And, needed just the triple to hit for the cycle. Gerstner and Maddela each tallied three hits; while Cortes added two.
Keegan Fairley earned the win, the first of his career, holding the Panthers scoreless on one hit with eight strikeouts through five innings of work.
Shorter will returned to action Friday afternoon as they travel to Alabama Huntsville for a three-game, Gulf South Conference series. Friday's doubleheader is set to begin at 3:00pm ET.
