Huntsville, Ala. -- Alabama Huntsville swept the doubleheader with the Hawks Friday afternoon, taking the opener 10-8, before winning the finale 5-4.
Shorter slips to 16-12 overall and 6-11 in conference play; while the Chargers improve to 13-15 on the season and 8-9 in the GSC.
UAH took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of game one as Justin Ware came in a double play. The scored twice in third, to make it a 2-1 game, on an RBI single from
Bailey Gerstner that plated
Raul Cortes and
Jack Leech .
The Chargers answered in the bottom of the inning with a run, before making it a 7-2 game with five in the fourth.
Shorter cut into the lead with a run of their own in the fifth as
Blaze Vazquez delivered an RBI single to center field. But, again UAH answered, scoring a run in the fifth and two in the sixth to extend their lead to 10-3.
The Hawks rallied for two in the seventh on a 2-run single from
Ty Cherry to cut the lead to five. Before, adding two more in the eighth, for the 10-7 score, on an RBI hits from Cortes and Gerstner. Shorter added a final run in the top of the ninth when
William Winslow scored on a fielder's choice for the 10-8 final score.
Banks Woodley took the loss, allowing seven runs – four earned – on seven hits with a walk and a strikeout through four innings of work.
Shorter scored first in game two, taking a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a sacrifice fly from Cherry and an RBI triple from
Isaiah Maddela. Only to have the Chargers answer for three in the second to take the lead, before adding another in the third for the 4-2 score.
The Hawks tallied a run each in the fifth and sixth to tie the game 4-4. First as Gerstner scored on an error, and then as Cortes came in on a sacrifice fly.
The Chargers earned the win in their last at-bat on an AJ Walden homerun to left field for the 5-4 score.
Jonathan Pintaro took the loss, allowing one run on one hit with four strikeouts through 1.1 innings of work.
Jacob Ramos made the start, lasting three innings, allowing four runs on seven hits with two walks and four strikeouts.
Gerstner finished the day with four hits – three in game one; while Chery and Cortes finished with two and Leech tallied three.
The Hawks will look to avoid the three-game sweep with a win Saturday; game time is set for 11:30am ET from Huntsville, Ala.
