Cleveland, Tenn. --Â Lee used a late comeback to down the Hawks 6-5 Sunday afternoon to take the Gulf South Conference series.
Shorter moves to 15-10 overall and 6-9 in conference play; while the Flames improve to 18-9 on the year and 8-7 in the GSC.
The Hawks took the lead early, taking advantage of a Flames error to make it a 3-0 game in the third inning.
Luis Acevedo scored first run on an RBI single from
Bailey Gerstner; before
Raul Cortes and Gerstner came around on the play when a throwing error on the catcher sent the ball into the outfield.
Shorter added to it in the sixth with two runs to make it a 5-0 game in the Hawks' favor. First, as
Isaiah Maddela scored on an RBI double from
Jack Leech after reaching base on an error by the shortstop. Leech then came in, for the Hawks' final run, on a single to left field from
Dustin Lawson.
Lee cut into the lead with a run of their own in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single. Before earning the win with a five-run ninth inning, for the 6-5 score.
Gerstner, Lawson and Acevedo each finished with two hits apiece; while
Blaze Vazquez, Leech, and Cortes added one.
Jerry Liang made the start for Shorter, going 6.2 innings; allowing one run on ten hits with a walk and three strikeouts. He gave way for
Jesse Wheeler; who went 1.1 innings, allowing two runs on two hits with two walks and a strikeout.
Jonathan Pintaro took the loss, allowing three runs on two hits with two walks and a strikeout through two-thirds of an inning.
The Hawks will be back in action Wednesday afternoon, March 22, when they welcome Clark Atlanta to the Robert H. Ledbetter Baseball Complex for a 2:00pm start. Shorter won the first meeting of the teams 11-0 back on February 22.
