Hawks split with Lee

Cleveland, Tenn. -- The Hawks split with longtime rival, Lee University, Saturday afternoon; taking the opener 3-2 in twelve innings, before falling in the finale 8-1.

The Flames scored first in game one, taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Only to have Shorter (15-9, 6-8 GSC) tie the game in the fourth on a solo homerun to left field from Blaze Vazquez, and take the lead in the eight on an RBI single from Jack Leech.

Lee (17-9, 7-7) tied the game in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI single.

The game remained tied until the twelfth, when the Hawks broke through for the winning run. With one out, Patrick Sanderson walked, before Luis Acevedo struck out looking. Down to their last out, Raul Cortes singled through the left side, then Steven Maier – pinch hitting for Vazquez – delivered an RBI single to right field, plating Sanderson for the go-ahead. The Flames led off the bottom of the inning with a double, but the Hawks retired the next three in order to earn the 3-2 win.

Eight different players finished with a hit in the game for Shorter.

Jesse Wheeler earned the win, pitching a scoreless eleventh inning; allowing one hit. While, Jonathan Pintaro earned his first career save with a scoreless twelfth, allowing one hit with a strikeout.

In game two, Shorter got on the board first, scoring a run in the second when Isaiah Maddela scored on a balk. But, that was all the offense the Hawks would get as Lee posted eight unanswered runs through the remaining five innings to each the 8-1 win.

The Hawks were held to three hits in the game, with William Winslow, Bailey Gerstner and Jake Harrelson each recording one.

Jacob Ramos took the loss, allowing three runs on six hits with two walks and two strikeouts through 4.2 innings of work.

Shorter will look to get back in the win column Sunday afternoon in the series finale. Game time from Cleveland, Tenn. is set for 1:00pm.
