ROME -- The Hawks fell to Valdosta State in the series finale, 3-2, in fourteen innings Sunday afternoon.
Shorter moves to 14-8 on the year; while the Blazers improve to 16-7 overall.
The Hawks got on the board first, scoring on in the bottom of the third on an RBI single from
William Winslow, plating
Patrick Sanderson; who drew a walk to lead off the inning. Valdosta State answered in the sixth with a run of their own to tie things up, on a sacrifice fly from Max Abramson, before taking the lead in the eighth when Dalton Murray scored on a passed ball.
Shorter rallied in the eighth as
Dustin Lawson doubled with one out. He was replaced by
Ivan Nunez, who then scored on a single from
Luis Acevedo, to tie the game 2-2.
From there the teams battled for six more innings.
The Hawks had chances in each the 9th and the 11th, stranding two runners both times. While, the Shorter defense came up big to halt the Blazers chances. In the top of the 12th,
Blaze Vazquez pulled back a would be homerun from Tyler Homer. While,
Jack Leech caught two trying to steal to end the 9th and the 12th.
Valdosta State pushed the go ahead across in the top of the 14th on a single through the left side from Ryan Slaughter to plate Abramson; who reached on a single to start the inning. Before sitting the Hawks down in order to preserve the win, 3-2.
Harrison Shubert took the loss after pitching the final two innings; during which, he allowed one run on two hits with two strikeouts. Starter,
Jerry Liang, went eight innings; allowing no earned runs on three hits with eight strikeouts.
The Hawks finished with 12 hits in the game with Vazquez and Winslow each recording three; while Leech added two.
The Hawks return to action next weekend at longtime rival, Lee University, in Cleveland, Tenn. Game times are set for 1:00pm, both Saturday and Sunday.
