Clinton, Miss. --Â Mississippi College used a 15-0 run in the fourth quarter to down the Lady Hawks 64-58 from Clinton, Miss. Thursday evening.
The teams kept things close throughout the first three quarters, with Shorter taking its first lead of the night, 7-4, on a layup and free throw from
Taylor Adams early in the first quarter.
Raven Fair followed with a jumper for Shorter after a basket from Toni Woods cut the lead to one to bring the Lady Hawks' lead back to three points with 5:03 to go. Only to have MC take a 5-0 run after the media timeout to close out the first quarter with an 11-9 lead.
In the second quarter, the teams traded baskets and the lead with SU taking its largest of the frame, 27-22, with 1:50 to go play on a layup from
Kayla Tillie to cap off an 11-2 run by the Lady Hawks. But, again the Lady Choctaws answered, posting a 6-2 run to close the gap and the quarter with the game tied at 28-28.
During the first half Adams posted 15 points, on 5-10 shooting, for Shorter.
After the break, the teams matched each other point for point with neither team able to make a considerable run. MC got as close as one, 40-39, in the quarter but couldn't get over the hump as the Lady Hawks outscored the Lady Choctaws 10-6 through the final five minutes, with six coming on a pair of threes from
Domonique Clune, to take a 50-45 lead into the final ten minutes.
The difference, however, came in the fourth when MC scored the quarters first 15 points to turn the advantage into their favor 60-50. Shorter finally broke into the scoring column for the quarter with 3:54 remaining as Adams netted a free throw, while the first field goal didn't fall until Fair converted moments later. During the final 2:00Â the Lady Hawks outscored MC 7-4, but it wasn't enough as the Lady Choctaws held on for the win, 64-58.
Adams led all scorers with 20 points for the game, while also adding 15 rebounds for her eighth double-double of the year and first since January 19 at UAH.
Shorter will look to rebound Saturday at Delta State. Game time is set for 3:00pm EST from Cleveland, Miss. The Lady Hawks won the first meeting of the teams, 61-54, at home.
