Women's Basketball falls at Delta State

Cleveland, Miss. -- Shorter Women's Basketball fell to Delta State 64-58 on the road Saturday afternoon.

The loss drops the Lady Hawks to 8-15 overall and 7-11 in conference play; while the Lady Statesmen improve to 11-12 overall and 8-10 in the GSC.

Shorter opened the game on a 12-2 run to take their largest lead of the contest midway through the first quarter. And from there kept the advantage, taking a 14-10 lead into the second period.

In the second frame the teams traded baskets, with the Lady Hawks holding the lead throughout, despite DSU cutting it to one possession multiple times; before ultimately taking the lead 26-25 on a layup from Carly Keller just before halftime.

In the third quarter, the Lady Hawks went up by three on a layup from Raven Fair and a pair of free throws from Kayla Tillie with 8:52 to play. DSU answered to tie the game on a three from Alondrea Rush seconds later and went ahead on a second three from Rush with 7:50 remaining. From there the Lady Statesman never trailed in the third, taking a 7-point, 49-42, lead into the final ten minutes.

The Lady Hawks tied the game at 51-51 three minutes into the fourth on a free throw from Taylor Adams that capped off a 9-3 run. But, DSU answered with a layup from Keller to take the lead, and outscored the Lady Hawks 11-7 in the final six minutes to hang on for the 64-58 win.

Tillie led the Lady Hawks with 16 points in the game; while Adams added 12 points to go along with 8 rebounds.

Rush led the Lady Statesmen with 18 points.

Shorter will look to get back in the win column on Thursday, February 16, when they welcome West Georgia to the Winthrop-King Centre for a 6:00pm start.
