West Georgia edges Women's Basketball, 57-51

ROME -- The Lady Hawks fell to West Georgia, 57-51, at home Thursday night.

The loss drops Shorter to 8-16 on the season and 7-12 in conference play; while the Wolves improve to 13-10 overall and 12-7 in the GSC.

Scoring was hard to come by in the first quarter, as neither team tallied a goal until after two and half minutes had clicked off the clock. But, it was West Georgia that finally broke through first, using a 5-0 run to open the first half. Only to have the Lady Hawks cut the lead to one on back to back baskets from Raven Fair and Taylor Adams. Unfortunately, those were the only points Shorter would score during the frame, while the Wolves added another five to take a 10-4 lead into the second quarter.

In the second period, West Georgia added to it, leading by 13 (25-12) with 2:47 to play in the half. Shorter, however, managed to close the gap to nine in the final minutes; outscoring the Wolves 7-3 during the span.

The Lady Hawks opened the third quarter on an 8-0 run to cut the lead to one on back to back threes from Brittany Greene and a jumper from Adams with 6:59 to play. West Georgia answered with five points of their own to make it a six point game, but Greene countered with her third trey of the quarter to cut the lead back to two. And, BreAnna Thompson followed with a layup moments later to tie the game at 34-all with 3:30 to go.

Over the next two minutes the teams traded baskets and the lead, with Shorter closing out the quarter with a narrow, 40-38, advantage.

De'Ashia Jones tied things up early in the fourth quarter, then gave her team the lead on a layup with 5:50 to play, and from there the Wolves kept the game in their favor. Despite the Lady Hawks pressing, the home team wasn't able to get any closer than two and ultimately fell to West Georgia, 57-51.

Thompson led the effort for Shorter, turning in a season high 17 points. Greene also finished in double figures with 11, while Adams added 10 rebounds to go along with nine points.

Shorter will look to get back on track Saturday as they welcome West Alabama to the Winthrop-King Centre for the final home game of the year. Between the men's and women's games, the Lady Hawks will honor Adams, Greene and Grace Rogers for their service to the team over the years. Game time for the Lady Hawks is set for 2:00pm
