Franklin Springs, Ga. -- Four homered as the Hawks topped Emmanuel College 13-7 on the road Tuesday afternoon.
Shorter improves to 9-5 on the season; while the Lions slip to 6-10 overall.
After falling behind, 2-0, in the first as Emmanuel tagged the Hawks for two solo homeruns; Shorter came back in the third with one to cut the lead in half as
Jack Leech delivered a sacrifice fly to center field to bring in
Raul Cortes, who led off the inning with a single.
The Hawks then took the lead in the fourth with two runs. First, as
Blaze Vazquez notched an RBI single through the left side, bringing in
Dustin Lawson. And, then, as Vazquez came in on a double steal attempt; where Gerstner was out at second.
Shorter made it a 5-3 game in the fifth with two additional runs on a two-run homer from Leech.
Emmanuel managed three runs in the bottom of the sixth to regain the lead, 6-3. But the Hawks, countered in their next at bat with four of their own to make it a 9-6 game.
William Winslow led off the inning with a walk, and moved to second on a single from Leech, before both came in on
Ty Cherry's sixth homerun of the season. Vazquez followed later in the inning with a homer of his own – a solo shot, and his first of the year. Â
The Lions added a final run in the eighth; while Shorter tacked on four in the ninth for the 13-7 final score. The first two came on a doubled from
Nate Butterworth. And, then as Cortes connected on his third homerun of the year, bringing in Butterworth.
Jason Gifford earned the win, to move to 2-1 on the season, allowing one run on two hits with a walk and strikeout in 1.1 innings of work.
Vazquez finished the day 4-5 at the plate with two RBI and three runs scored. While, Cortes added three hits and Leech tallied two.
The Hawks return to Gulf South Conference action this weekend, March 4-5, at Mississippi College in Clinton, Miss.
