The Hawks fell to Mars Hill, 18-6, Saturday afternoon on the road.
The loss drops Shorter to 0-4 on the year; while the Mountain Lions improve to 2-1 overall.
Mars Hill jumped out to a 2-0 lead midway through the first quarter, only to have the Hawks tie the game moments later on back to back goals from
Nate Malinowski – his first of the year – and
Jon Paul. The Mountain Lions this closed out the quarter on three consecutive goals to take a 5-2 lead into the second period; where they opened the scoring with four goals to extend their lead.
Matt McHugh halted the Mars Hill run with his first score of the game on a pass from Malinowski with 1:48 to play in the first half. While, the Mountain Lions added a final goal in the quarter to take a 10-3 advantage into the second half.
In the third quarter, the Mountain Lions tacked on five more goals to extend their lead, before
Austin Zumbado stopped the run with a goal of his own with 3:05 to play in the period to make it a 15-4 game. Mars Hill then closed out the period with three goals to take an 18-4 advantage in 10:26 remaining in the game.
In the final three minutes, Paul and McHugh turned in their second goals of the game for the 18-6 final score.
Malinowski and McHugh finished with three points apiece. Malinowski with one goal and two assists; while McHugh tallied two goals and one assist. Paul also finished with two goals, and Zumbado added his sixth of the season.
Garry Robinson played the complete game in goal for the Hawks, tallying 12 saves. While,
Morgan DeNoers led the defense with four caused turnovers and five ground balls.
Shorter will be back in action next Saturday, March 4, when they return home to take on Lincoln Memorial at 1:00pm at Ben Brady Field.
