Lincoln Memorial tops the Hawks, 15-6

ROME -- The Hawks turned in their most complete effort of the season Saturday afternoon, despite falling to Lincoln Memorial 15-6.

Shorter slips to 0-5 on the year; while the Railsplitters improve to 4-1.

Nate Malinowski got things going for Shorter, netting a pass from Austin Zumbado for the game's first goal with 8:50 to play in the opening quarter. Only to have LMU counter with a score of their own two minutes later to tie the game, and then go ahead seconds after that as Hunter Clark scored off the face-off. Shorter then tied the game at 2 on the first goal of the day from Chase Rogers. Before, the Railsplitters tacked on one more to take a 3-2 lead into the second quarter.

The second period proved to the be decisive frame as LMU tallied seven goals to pull away. Shorter posted one from Zumbado with 12:16 on the clock to make it a 6-3 game, but that would be as close as the Hawks would get for the remainder of the contest. The Railsplitters held a 10-3 halftime advantage.

In the second half, Shorter picked things up on defense, holding LMU to five goals for the remainder of the game.

The Railsplitters opened the third with a score; which was followed by the Hawks' lone goal of the period, the second of the game from Rogers on a pass from William Millwood, with 6:58 remaining. Lincoln Memorial added a final goal in the final minute of the quarter to move to the fourth up 12-4.

Malinowski found the back of the net for the second time in the game to open the scoring in the final period, and was followed by back-to-back goal from LMU's Adam Golia to make it a 14-5 game with 7:58 to play. But, Rogers answered for SU to halt the run with his third goal for the game, before the Railsplitters posted one more goal for the 15-6 final score.

In total, LMU outshot the Hawks 47-25 and held a 34-122 advantage in shots on goal and in ground balls 33-21. Shorter, however, held a slight advantage on the face-off 13-12; while Garry Robinson and Richard Ticer combined for 19 saves.

Rogers finished with a team high, three goals. While, Morgan DeNoers anchored the defense with six caused turnovers and seven groundballs. And, Jake Mathews finished 10-16 on the face-off.

The Hawks will be back in action Wednesday, March 8, as they travel to North Greenville for a 4:00pm start.
