ROME -- The Hawks stayed perfect on the season with a two game sweep of Brevard College Saturday afternoon at the Robert H. Ledbetter Baseball Complex.
The wins improve Shorter to 5-0 while the Tornados slipped to 2-5 on the year.
In game one, Brevard took a 4-0 lead into the sixth inning where the Hawks began chipping away.
William Winslow led off the rally with an RBI double to plate
Isaiah Maddela in the sixth. Before scoring, along with
Blaze Vazquez, later in the inning on a 2RBI double from
Patrick Sanderson to make it a 4-3 game.
The Hawks took the lead in the eighth on homeruns from
Jack Leech and
Ty Cherry to earn the win.
Dustin Lawson led off the inning with a single and came in on Leech's homerun, and then Cherry – pinch hitting for
Kaleb Thomas – hit his first of the day for the 6-4 score.
Jason Gifford earned his first win of the season after coming on in relief during the bottom of the seventh. And
Banks Woodley tallied his first save of the year, closing out the ninth inning with two strikeouts.
Brevard threatened in the first inning of game two, leaving the bases loaded, but only one run crossed the plate.
The Hawks answered in the bottom of the inning with five runs to take a 5-1 lead. Winslow doubled to start things off and was followed by a walk from Vazquez, before a single from Lawson loaded the bases. Leech then drew a walk to bring in Winslow and tie the game. Sanderson gave the Hawks the lead with a sacrifice fly to left field, before Cherry homered to clear the bases and made it a 5-1 game.
Shorter added two final runs in the sixth on a 2RBI single from
Raul Cortes to plate Sanderson and Cherry; who reached base on a single and walk, respectively.
Jonathan Pintaro and
Jerry Liang combined for the no-hitter, with Pintaro earning his second win of the year. Through six innings of work Pintaro allowed one unearned run on no hits with 10 strikeouts; while Liang added a scoreless seventh inning with a strikeout.
The Hawks will be back in action Sunday afternoon, February 12, for the final game in the series with Brevard. First pitch is set for 1:00pm.
