ROME -- The Hawks rallied in the ninth to earn a walk-off win over Brevard, 8-7, to move to 6-0 on the season.
The Tornados took a 1-0 lead in the first on a homerun from K. Morrison, only to have Shorter answer in the bottom of the inning to tie the game on as
William Winslow scored the Hawks' first run.
Brevard countered in the second for two runs to regain the lead, but again the Hawks answered. This time as Winslow delivered her first homerun of the year, bringing in
Isaiah Maddela and
Bailey Gerstner to give Shorter a 4-3 advantage in the third inning.
The Tornados added four runs between the sixth and seventh to make it a 7-4 game. In the bottom of the inning the Hawks cut the lead to two on a homerun from
Ty Cherry. And, in his next at bat Chery made it 7-6 as he tallied his fourth homerun of the weekend to send the game to the ninth with the Hawks down 7-6.
But, the Hawks rallied in their final at bat to earn the win.
Raul Cortes opened the scoring with a homerun to straight-away center and with two outs
Blaze Vazquez doubled, and moved to third ona single from
Dustin Lawson; before coming in to score on a wild pitch, with
Jack Leech batting, for the game winner.
Vazquez finished 3-4 at the plate; while Winslow, Cherry, Lawson and Cortes all tallied two hits.
Jacob Farmer earned the win, pitching the final two innings; allowing no runs on no hits with three strikeouts.
The Hawks will be back in action next weekend, February 18-19, as they welcome Union University to the Robert H. Ledbetter Baseball Complex for the first Gulf South Conference series of the year. Saturday's doubleheader is set to begin at 12:00pm; while Sunday's single game is scheduled to begin at 1:00pm.
