Hawks fall to AUM, 66-61

ROME -- Down by five at halftime, the Hawks came back in the second half to keep things close, as AUM narrowly escaped with the win, 66-61.

The loss drops Shorter to 1-8 on the season and 1-1 in the GSC; while AUM moves to 4-4 overall and 1-1 in conference play – earning their first-ever GSC basketball win.

In the opening minutes of the second half, the Warhawks kept the momentum, leading by six (38-32) with 17:10 to play. Only to have the Hawks come back over the next two minutes to tie things up at 38-38 on a layup from Josh Burnett, forcing two AUM turnovers in the process. From there, the teams traded baskets and the lead. Burnett made it a 56-53 game, in favor of the Hawks with just over three minutes remaining, and after a quick tally from AUM, regained the advantage with a three moments later for the 61-59 score. But, it wouldn't stand as the Warhawks answered with seconds to play with a three from Jarvis Johnson and converted 4-4 from the free throw line to earn the win 66-61.

Burnett led the effort for Shorter, nearly posting his second double-double in as many games; finishing with 24 points and nine rebounds. While, Amonte Potter added 13 points and Drew Thomas chipped in with 12. With every Hawk that played tallying at least one point for Shorter in the contest.

AUM had three players finish in double figures, led by Desmond DeRamus with 23, Darrion Taylor with 16 and Kenneth Keith with 10.

The Hawks will look to get back into the win column next week, as they welcome non-conference foe, Clark Atlanta to the Winthrop-King Centre for an in-region class on Monday, December 11, beginning at 8:00pm.
