ROME --Â The Lady Hawks fourth quarter comeback fell short, Saturday afternoon as they fell to AUM 54-49.
The loss drops Shorter to 1-6 on the season and 0-2 in conference play; while the GSC newcomer, Warhawks, move to 4-3 on the season and 1-1 in the conference – earning their first ever GSC basketball win.
AUM led 45-33 heading into the final quarter, and added to it in the opening minutes of the fourth to takes their largest lead of the afternoon – a 16-point advantage, 51-35, with 7:35 to play. From there, however, the Lady Hawks tallied a 14-0 run to cut the lead to two with just over a minute to play.
Denise Newton sparked the run with a jumper at the 7:13 mark, and from there netted the next eight points to make it a six-point game, 51-45, with 2:35 to play.
Jordan McCarver followed with a three to cut the lead to three and
Jasmine Gaines added a free throw for the 51-49 score with 1:32 to go. Through the remaining time, the teams scrambled to put the game away with the Warhawks adding a three; while the Lady Hawks were held scoreless for the 54-49 final score.
Newton led the offense with 12 points – ten coming in the fourth quarter; while
BreAnna Thompson chipped in with 11 and
Bianca Thornton adding eight. Thornton also turned in a game high six assists, and
Jackie Hudson led the effort on the glass with seven rebounds – four coming on the offensive end.
Evelina Avleeva led AUM with 19 points, while Makayla Bullard added 11.
The Lady Hawks will have the next week off before returning to action on Monday, December 11, as they welcome Clark Atlanta to the Winthrop-King Centre for a non-conference matchup.
