Last second shot lifts Lady Hawks over Clark Atlanta

ROME -- The Lady Hawks used a second half comeback to down Clark Atlanta 70-69 in the final non-conference game of the season Monday evening.

With the win, Shorter improves to 2-6 on the season; while the Panthers move to 5-4 on the year.

Trailing by eleven at halftime, the Lady Hawks came back in the third to spark the comeback. In the opening minutes of the third period, Clark Atlanta extended its lead to 17 on a layup from Reyana Miller for the 47-30 score. Only to have Shorter use a 16-1 run over the final six minutes to cut the lead to two heading into the final ten minutes. Jasmine Gaines sparked the run with a pair of free throws and after a free throw from CAU made it a 16-point game with 4:28 to go, the Lady Hawks tallied the final 14 points for the 48-46 score at the end of the frame. Gaines and Bianca Thornton accounted for six and five of the points, respectively, during the run.

Tatum Ragsdale tied the game in the opening seconds of the final period with a layup. The Lady Hawks then took the lead on a free throw from Gaines moments later, and added to their lead; extending the advantage to as many as nine – 68-59 – on a layup from BreAnna Thompson with 2:24 to play. Down the stretch, however, Clark Atlanta closed the gap; using a 10-0 run to take a 1-point, 69-68, lead with thirty seconds to play. Giving the Lady Hawks enough time to earn the win. Hudson missed her layup attempt, but got her own rebound and passed the ball off to Thompson for the game winner.

Gaines led the Lady Hawks offense with 19 points – eleven from the free throw line – while, Thompson finished the 18, Thornton added 15 and Ragsdale chipped in with 10. Thompson also added 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the year.

The Panthers were led by Naomi Holloway's 17 points.

The Lady Hawks will be back in action Thursday, December 14, at North Alabama as they take on the GSC's lone unbeaten team. Game time is set for 7:00pm EST from Flowers Hall in Florence, Ala.
