Lady Hawks fall to UNA on the road

Florence, Ala. -- The Lady Hawks fell to North Alabama 94-44 on the road Thursday night in the what could be the last-ever meeting of the teams as UNA completes its final season of DII play.

Shorter moves to 2-7 on the season and 0-3 in conference play; while the Lions improved to 10-0 on the year and 3-0 in the GSC.

After trading baskets during the opening minutes, the Lions tallied a 17-2 run to make it a 24-7 game at the end of the first quarter. And added to it in the second to take a 26-point, 46-20, advantage into the break.

UNA kept the momentum out of the locker room, opening the third quarter with an 8-0 run to extend their lead. The Lady Hawks then broke through for their first points of the second half with 5:23 remaining on a three from Bianca Thornton to make it a 54-23 game. Through the final five minutes, the Lions added a 13-5 run to move into the final ten minutes leading 67-29.

Despite Shorter turning in its best offensive effort of the night in the final period, the Lions did the same; outscoring the Lady Hawks 27-15 through the ten minute period to earn the win 94-44.

Turnovers were costly for the Lady Hawks in the loss, as UNA turned 18 Shorter turnovers into 25 points. While, the Lady Hawks were only able to tally two points off turnovers on the night.

Jasmine Gaines, Denise Newton and Thornton led the offensive effort for Shorter, turning in eight points apiece. While, UNA had five players finish in double-figures; led by 25 from Emma Wallen. Ivy Wallen added a double-double of 15 points and 12 assists; and Michaela DeKilder turned in a double-double of 11 points, 13 rebounds.

The Lady Hawks will look to get back on track in the final game of 2017 as they travel to UAH for a 6:30pm ET matchup on Monday, December 18.
