Wolves edge Lady Hawks in GSC opener

ROME -- The Lady Hawks fell to West Georgia, 61-47, in the GSC opener Thursday night from the Winthrop-King Centre.

Shorter moves to 1-5 on the year and 0-1 in the conference play; while the Wolves improve to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in the GSC.

It was a hard-fought game, with tied scores at both halftime and the end of the third, but the fourth went the way of the Wolves as they outscored the Lady Hawks 19-5 in the final frame to earn the win.

Shorter saw its largest lead of the game with 2:50 to play in the second as Jasmine Gaines netted a layup to make it a 30-24 game. Only to have the Wolves close out the period on a 6-0 run to tie things up at 30-30 heading into halftime. Throughout the third the teams traded baskets and the lead with neither being able to put together a considerable run.

Tied at 42-all heading into the final ten minutes; the Wolves pulled away with a 12-0 run to start things off, sealing the game in their favor.

Bianca Thornton led the offense for Shorter, turning in a team high nine points; while both, BreAnna Thompson and Gaines added eight. Gaines led the effort on the glass, pulling down seven rebounds, as well.

West Georgia saw three players reach double-figures; led by Jessica Brown's 15. Aysha Harris and D'Asia Cain chipped in with 11 and 10 apiece, respectively.

The Lady Hawks will look to get back on track Saturday as they welcome GSC newcomer, Auburn Montgomery, to the Winthrop-King Centre for a 2:00pm start.
