Lady Hawks fall to Clayton State, 66-48

Morrow, Ga. -- The Lady Hawks dropped their final tune up before conference play Monday night, falling to Clayton State 66-48.

With the loss, Shorter moves to 1-4 overall; while the Lakers improved to 2-4 on the season.

After Bianca Thornton scored the game's first points on a three in the opening seconds, the Lady Hawks offense went cold in the quarter as they were held scoreless until the final seconds of the period when Jasmine Gaines netted a pair of free throws with twenty-four seconds to play and Denise Newton added a free throw with eleven seconds remaining. While Clayton State tallied a 15-0 run to pull away. From there the Lakers never trailed, building their lead to as many as 27, midway through the third quarter.

In total, Clayton State shot 43.8% in the game; while holding the Lady Hawks to a 28.8% shooting for the night, including 13.3% from beyond the arc.

Gaines led the offensive effort for Shorter, finishing 6-11 from the field and 7-7 from the free throw line for a game high 19 points. BreAnna Thompson added six points on the night to go along with six rebounds. Thornton and Jordan McCarver each finished with five points.

The Lakers were led by Aleisha Merriweather's 10 points and six rebounds.

The Lady Hawks will look to get things back on track Thursday, November 30, as they welcome in-state rival West Georgia to the Winthrop-King Centre for opening of Gulf South Conference play. Game time is set for 6:00pm.
