Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Karen Allen

Hawks fall to Flagler on the road

The Hawks suffered their third setback of the year Tuesday evening, falling to Flagler College 87-74, from St. Augustine, Fla.

Shorter moves to 0-3 on the year; while the Saints open the year with a win.

After trading baskets over the opening minutes, the Hawks pulled away momentarily with a 4-1 run to take a 15-11 lead on a dunk from Josh Burnett with 13:35 to play in the first half. Only to have Flagler answer with a 12-3 run to take a 23-18 lead into the under-8:00 media timeout. From there, the Saints added to it with a 6-2 run, after the break, to bring their advantage to 29-20. But Shorter rallied, tallying a 7-0 run of their own, sparked by a layup from Drew Thomas with 5:41 remaining and capped by a pair of layups from Joe Russell, to cut the lead to two, 29-27, at the final media break of the half. Flagler then closed out the frame on a 12-2 run for the 41-29 halftime score.

The Saints kept the momentum in the second half, maintaining the lead throughout. The Hawks twice cut the lead to as few as six, on a layup from Russell and a pair of free throws from Burnett, but that was as close as they'd get as the Saints held on for the win, 87-74.

Four players finished in double figures for Shorter; with Amonte Potter leading the way with 21 points. Burnett added 17, Russell turned in 16 and TayVaughn Major chipped in with 11.

In total, the Hawks shot 44% from the field, including 25% from beyond the arc. While, the Saints connected on 53% of their shots, with a 27% night from three-points range.

Chris Williams and former Hawk, Damerit Brown, led Flagler with 22 points each.

Shorter remains on the road Saturday afternoon, November 18, as they travel to Harrogate, Tenn. to take on No. 4 Lincoln Memorial. Game time is set for 4:00pm. Before returning home next Tuesday for a rematch with the Railsplitters in consecutive games. The Hawks home opener vs. LMU is set for 7:00pm from the Winthrop-King Centre on November 21.
