ROME, Ga. – Shorter fell to the North Alabama Lions, 76-74, in a Gulf South Conference game that featured 11 lead changes in the final quarter alone.
The loss drops the Lady Hawks to 6-10 overall and 5-6 in GSC play. North Alabama improves to 14-3 and 8-3 in conference action.
The Lions held a seven-point lead after one quarter, but Shorter used a 20-point second period to tie the contest heading into the locker room.
Jackie Hudson scored the team's first points of the second quarter, cutting UNA's lead to five, 16-11. It was Hudson who made it a one-possession contest just five minutes later, before
Kayla Tillie hit a three-pointer, putting the Lady Hawks ahead, 21-19.
UNA was able to take a lead just 90 seconds prior to halftime, but
Roni Richardson's three tied the game, before each team added a field goal, making it a 29-29 game at the half .
In the third, the Lady Hawks outscored UNA by six over the final 5:55, taking a six-point lead heading into the final quarter.
Several players scored in the period, but
BreAnna Thompson and
Taylor Adams led the charge, combining to score 10 points over the final half of the third.
The Lady Hawks extended their lead to 10 points early in the final quarter when
Domonique Clune converted from beyond the arc, but the Lions slowly chipped away at Shorter's lead and tied the contest with six minutes remaining.
Over the final minutes, 11 lead changes took place. With 53 seconds left,
Raven Fair's jumper put Shorter up two, 72-70, but UNA answered with a three-pointer.
On the following possession, Adams put Shorter up a single point with only 22 ticks of the clock left, but the Lions got the last laugh.
North Alabama's Ivy Wallen's layup with 12 seconds remaining was successful, and the freshman hit a free throw just seven seconds later. Wallen's three points in the final seconds gave UNA a 76-74 road win.
Ivy Wallen led all players with 27 points and sister Emma added 17 for the Lions. Adams and Tillie scored 15 points a piece, while Hudson, Tillie, and Thompson each contributed 10.
North Alabama won the rebounding battle, 39-35. UNA shot 16 free throws, while the Lady Hawks took just one less shot from the charity stripe.
Shorter will have five days to regroup before taking the court on Thursday against Christian Brothers. Tipoff between the Lady Hawks and Lady Bucs is set for 6 p.m., from the Winthrop-King Centre.
