West Georgia Snaps Lady Hawks Win Streak

CARROLLTON, Ga. – Raven Fair cut the West Georgia lead to one with 2:55 to go in the fourth quarter, but the Lady Hawks were unable to get in front, and fell to the Wolves, 52-48.

The loss snaps a three-game win streak for Shorter and drops its record to 4-6 overall and 3-2 in Gulf South Conference play. West Georgia improves to 5-4 with its second straight win and now stands at 3-2 in the conference.

The first quarter was unkind to the Lady Hawks. After Jackie Hudson tied the game at two, Shorter was unable to score for nearly six minutes until Roni Richardson converted from deep.

Fair quickly followed Richardson's three with one of her own and at the end of one, West Georgia led by four, 12-8.

The second period saw the Lady Hawks rally to tie the contest at the half, outscoring the Wolves 17-13 over 10 minutes.

West Georgia doubled its lead in the first four minutes of the period, but it was a team effort by SU as Taylor Adams, Kayla Tillie, Fair, and Domonique Clune all contributed points.

Adams began the 9-2 run with two free throws, which is how the Lady Hawks scored the majority of their points en route to tying the game. Tillie and Fair both hit field goals, with Tillie converting from beyond the arc.

Fair's layup pulled Shorter within three, and Clune, who was fouled on a three-point attempt with 17 seconds until the intermission, hit all three shots, sending the teams to the locker room with the score deadlocked at 25.

Following the pattern of the first two quarters, UWG began the third period with the momentum. The Wolves took a five-point lead before two Adams free throws made it a one-possession game.

West Georgia answered, however, and took a nine-point lead just minutes later.

The Lady Hawks prevented the Wolves from taking a double-digit advantage and even managed to cut it to four, but a scoring drought over the final 3:12 of the quarter did not help Shorter's comeback.

At the end of three, the Lady Hawks trailed by nine.

For the second time in the game, Shorter cut the Wolves lead from nine to four, but were unable to make any more progress.

Following a timeout by head coach Vic Mitchell with 4:38 remaining, Fair scored six straight points to bring Shorter within one, 49-48, forcing a 30-second West Georgia timeout.

Two UWG free throws broke a four-minute period without points for the Wolves and gave them a three-point lead with under two minutes to play.

The scored remained unchanged until there were less than 20 ticks of the clock remaining and the Wolves went one of two from the free throw line after a missed layup by Fair.

The Lady Hawks had one last chance, but Tillie's three was blocked at the buzzer and the team fell by four, 52-48.The Wolves managed to hold Taylor Adams, the NCAA's leading scorer, in check all game, as she scored nine points on 2 of 15 shooting. Fair led Shorter with 18, while Richardson added 11. Jessica Brown scored 16 points for West Georgia.

The Lady Hawks return to the friendly confines of the Winthrop-King Centre when they host West Florida on Saturday, January 7. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.
