HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Ten players scored for the Lady Hawks as the team ended a two-game skid with a 67-58 victory over the Alabama Huntsville Chargers.
Taylor Adams and
Domonique Clune combined for 10 of Shorter's first 16 points. Although the Lady Hawks found themselves down 5-0 early, Adams gave SU its first lead with 3:33 remaining in the opening quarter and the team never trailed again.
Alabama Huntsville (2-13, 1-9 Gulf South Conference) tied the game twice in the opening period, but Clune's late three-pointer gave the Lady Hawks (6-9, 5-5 GSC) a 16-13 lead after one period.
In the second, the Chargers Baylee Johnson pulled UAH within two, but Clune responded, singlehandedly going on a 5-0 run to put Shorter up 28-21 with just 1:35 left until halftime.
At the intermission, the Lady Hawks held a six-point lead. Shorter shot over 35% from the floor and converted 11 of 14 first half free throw attempts.
Alabama Huntsville relied heavily on the three-point shot, but only managed to convert only 1 of 13 attempts from deep over the first two quarters.
The Lady Hawks opened the second half by taking their first double-digit lead of the game off Adams' layup.
SU led by as many as 17 in the third quarter when
BreAnna Thompson scored four straight points. At the end of the period, the team led by 13.
The Lady Hawks scored the first nine points of the fourth, with
Jordan McCarver starting the scoring with a three-pointer off a pass from
Raven Fair. The run helped Shorter lead by 22 points with only five minutes remaining.
UAH shaved seven points off the Lady Hawks advantage over the latter portion of the final quarter, but Shorter left Huntsville, Alabama with a 68-57 victory.
Three SU players scored in double figures, led by Adams, who had 16 points and 11 rebounds. Clune contributed 13 points, while Fair added 12. Johnson scored a game-high 17 points for Alabama Huntsville.
For the game, the Lady Hawks shot 45.8% and made 5 of 12 three-pointers. The Chargers shot 42.9% but hit only 6 of 22 field goals from beyond the arc. Shorter shot 10 more free throws than UAH and held a 35-23 advantage on the glass.
The Lady Hawks will return to action on Saturday, January 21 when they begin a five-game homestand. First up, the North Alabama Lady Lions come to Rome for a 2 p.m. tip.
