Women's Basketball Falls Short in Final Seconds

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Raven Fair's layup in the final seconds fell short, as the women's basketball team lost to Christian Brothers, 54-52, on the road.

The Lady Hawks shot under 30% in the first two quarters, but Kayla Tillie did her best to keep Shorter in the game.

In the first, Tillie scored Shorter's final five points of the period, helping keep Christian Brothers' advantage at only nine.

While the Lady Bucs doubled their lead by the halfway point of the second quarter, Tillie accounted for four more points during the Lady Hawks 10-0 run, which made the score 28-18 in favor of CBU. Raven Fair, Jackie Hudson, and Grace Rogers also contributed points during that span.

At the half, the ladies from Rome, Georgia trailed by 12, 30-18, despite a cold shooting start.

The Lady Bucs shot nearly 45% from the floor and hit 5 of 13 three-point attempts in the opening half, as they built a double-digit lead.

Similar to the first two quarters, Christian Brothers built another 18-point lead, but once again the Lady Hawks pulled within ten.

Taylor Adams and Fair each scored four points during SU's 10-2 run, which took place over four minutes.

Heading into the fourth, the Lady Hawks trailed, 47-37, but Adams quickly cut CBU's advantage to single digits just 30 seconds into the final period.

The nine-point deficit marked the first time since the end of the first quarter that Shorter trailed by less than ten points.

The Lady Hawks trailed by only a point late in the fourth when Jackie Hudson converted an old-fashioned three-point play with 2:33 remaining in the game.

Christian Brothers built a four-point advantage, but SU was behind only one score with under ten seconds to play.

Fair's two layup attempts in the final seconds fell short, as the Lady Hawks dropped their second straight contest.

Shorter shot 38% for the game but only 29% in the opening half. The Lady Bucs hit 37% of their shots.

Fair and Adams led Shorter with 12 points and 6 rebounds each, and Tillie added 11 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists. Samantha Reeves led CBU with 28 points on 10 of 15 shooting.

Shorter falls to 5-9 on the year, with a 4-5 record in Gulf South Conference action. The Lady Bucs improve to 9-5 overall and 6-4 in conference play.

The Lady Hawks will have four days off before returning to action at Alabama Huntsville on Thursday, January 19. Tipoff between Shorter and UAH is set for 6 p.m.
