MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Three players scored in double figures, but it was not enough, as the Hawks fell to Christian Brothers, 86-78.
Trailing by one early, Shorter used a 10-0 run to take a seven-point lead. Four different players scored during the run, including
Damerit Brown, who hit two straight to, the first of which put the Hawks in front.
Brown's first two points of the contest gave SU an 11-10 advantage just six minutes into the game. Shorter held the lead until the four-minute mark when Christian Brothers' Jeff Larkin hit two free throws, putting his team in front, 31-30.
The lead switched teams three times in the final minutes, and the Hawks
Phil Taylor hit a three with nine seconds left in the first half, sending Shorter to the locker room with a 43-40 lead.
An 11-point swing gave Christian Brothers the lead in the second half, but
Amonte Potter and Brown cut the Bucs advantage to two, first with 13 minutes to play, and again two minutes later.
When CBU made another run to push its lead back to six, Brown answered, scoring his 18
th point of the night with just six minutes to play, pulling the Hawks within two, 73-71.
Shorter was unable to take the lead away from the Bucs, and trailed by eight, but Taylor and
Eric Ross combined for six points, cutting the lead to two with just 2:44 left in the game.
The Hawks missed their final three field goals of the contest, as CBU outscored them 6-0, which secured an 86-78 for the home team.
Shorter falls to 9-5 and 4-5 in the conference, while the Bucs improve to 9-7 and 6-4 in the Gulf South.
Adam Dieball led all scorers with 33 for Christian Brothers, 23 of which came in the opening half. CBU's Larkin added 19.
For Shorter, Taylor scored a team-high 27 points, while Brown added 18. Ross recorded a double-double with 17 points and 14 rebounds.
The Hawks shot 51% from the floor, and Christian Brothers 50%. Shorter won the rebounding battle, 40-35, but had 12 turnovers, while the Bucs coughed up the ball only seven times.
Shorter will return to action on Thursday, January 19, at Alabama Huntsville. Tipoff of the GSC matchup between the Hawks and Chargers is set for 8:30 p.m.
