Hawks Fall to Nationally-Ranked Chargers, 83-75

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Three players scored in double figures, but Shorter fell to No. 25 Alabama Huntsville, 83-75, on Thursday night.

The Hawks trailed by nine early in the first half, but four different players, including Eric Ross, sparked a 9-0 Shorter run, giving the visitors an 11-9 lead.

Despite being ahead by two, the Hawks could not pull ahead, as contest remained tight throughout the first 20 minutes, with the lead changing hands six separate times.

With 10:38 left in the half, Warren Helligar's jumper tied the game at 21, and moments later he added a free throw, giving SU a one-point advantage. Phil Taylor followed Helligar's free throw with a jumper, but the Hawks advantage was short lived.

The Chargers ended the period on a 17-6 run, taking a 38-30 lead to the locker room. Taylor accounted for six of Shorter's seven points over the final 10 minutes of the first half.

The Hawks shot nearly 35% over the first 20 minutes, but failed to convert from behind the three-point line, missing all nine attempts. Alabama Huntsville had a hot shooting half, making 45.4% of its shots and all six of its free throws.

Just minutes into the second half, freshman Damerit Brown, who was honored by the Gulf South Conference this week, helped Shorter make it a two-possession game, but the Chargers answered, quickly taking a double-digit lead.

Taylor, along with Mike Wickliff, did not allow Alabama Huntsville to extend its advantage past 12 points, and with just 6:13 remaining in the game, the Hawks trailed by only seven, 67-60.

Shorter continued to inch closer, using a 11-5 to pull within a single-point with two minutes until the end of regulation. Taylor accounted for nine points during the run, while Ross added two.

Ross and Taylor both cored again, but the Chargers scored 11 points over the final 120 seconds, which helped them defeat Shorter, 83-75.

The loss drops the Hawks to 10-6 overall and 4-6 in the GSC. Alabama Huntsville improves to 12-4 overall and 8-2 in conference play.

Taylor led Shorter with 24 points, while Ross turned in a double-double of 16 points and 24 rebounds. Wickliff added 11 for the Hawks. Seab Webster led the Chargers with 16 points.

The Hawks struggled from three-point territory, making only 20% of their attempts from beyond the arc, but 39.7% overall. UAH shot 43.8% from the field, while also hitting 19 of 23 free throw attempts.

Shorter will return to action on Saturday, January 21 at 4 p.m. vs North Alabama. The game is the first of five straight GSC home games for the Hawks.
