Comeback Stalls as Lady Hawks Lose By Nine

JACKSON, Tenn. – Raven Fair led a fourth quarter comeback, but it fell short as the Lady Hawks lost to Union University on Thursday night, 65-56.

The Lady Bulldogs got off to a hot start, taking a 10-2 lead over Shorter, but Domonique Clune scored five quick points, cutting the Union lead to 13-7.

The Lady Bulldogs (9-6, 4-5 GSC) Ashtrid Hutteman hit a three-pointer with 13 seconds remaining in the opening period, leaving Shorter (5-8, 4-4 GSC) down nine at the end of the quarter.

In the second, Taylor Adams, the Gulf South Conference's leading scorer, cut the Union lead to seven, but the home team quickly took a double-digit lead, doubling up Shorter, 28-14.

At the half, the Lady Hawks trailed, 30-16.

Clune scored seven of Shorter's first half points, but the difference maker was the Lady Bulldogs hot shooting from beyond the arc. Union hit 8 of 20 three's in the first half en route to a double-digit halftime lead.

The Lady Bulldogs led by as many as 16 in the third, but Clune kept the Lady Hawks in the game. She hit two three-pointers, scoring her 18th point of the night with 1:15 remaining in the quarter, to pull Shorter within eight, 42-34.

After 30 minutes, the Lady Hawks trailed 46-36, but Fair and BreAnna Thompson led a furious comeback in the final quarter.

The duo combined for 10 points over the first 3:30 of the period, making it a five-point game in favor of Union.

Fair's free throws made it a one-possession game late in the quarter, but an 8-2 Lady Bulldogs run gave the home team a nine-point lead.

Adams' three-pointer made it a six-point game with 29 seconds left, but it was too little, too late as the Lady Hawks were unable to complete the comeback and fell, 65-56.

Union's Hutteman led all players with 19 points. Clune led Shorter with 18, while Fair added 17 points. The Lady Hawks connected on 36% of their shots and the Lady Bulldogs made 38% of their attempts.

Shorter will play its final road game before a five-game homestand when it travels to Christian Brothers University on Saturday, January 14. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. from Memphis, Tennessee.
