Helligar Leads Hawks Over Union

JACKSON, Tenn. – Warren Helligar scored a career-high 29 points in a 92-87 win against Gulf South Conference opponent Union University.

Union (9-6, 4-5 GSC) jumped out to an 11-point lead, its largest of the game, less than four minutes into the first half, but Shorter (9-4, 4-4 GSC) rallied over the next several minutes.

Helligar tied the game at 23, and from there the Hawks went on a 15-8 run .

Shorter led by as many as 14 when Eric Ross dunked with 69 seconds until halftime. At the intermission, the Hawks led by nine, 49-40.                                                                                                

The Bulldogs quickly cut into the Hawks lead in the opening minutes of the second half, making it a three-point game, but Damerit Brown converted from beyond the arc, putting the Hawks up six with 17:29 to play, and starting a 9-0 run Shorter run.

Despite the run, the Hawks could not pull away as the Bulldogs kept the lead under 10 points.

Seemingly every time Union scored, however, Helligar had an answer. His three-pointer with nine minutes to go in the contest gave SU an eight-point lead.

The field goal from beyond the arc capped a 60 second span where he accounted for seven straight points for the Hawks.  

Shorter's lead remained unchanged for the most part, until the final minute, when Union pulled within two, 87-85.

A layup by Brown extended the Hawks advantage to four, but the Bulldogs answered and thus trailed by two, 89-87, with nine seconds left in the contest.

???????Helligar capped off his career night by hitting three free throws in the final seconds, which helped Shorter leave Fred Delay Gymnasium with a 92-87 victory.

Helligar's 29 points led all scorers. Three other players scored in double figures for the Hawks, with Brown scoring 19, Amonte Potter 15, and Ross 12. Ross recorded his fourth consecutive double-double by also pulling down 10 rebounds.

Jarad Scott scored 19 points for Union and was one of five Bulldogs in double figures.

Both teams shot 53% from the floor, but Shorter held a significant advantage at the free throw line, with 25 attempts, while Union shot only 10.

The Hawks will return to action on Saturday at Christian Brothers. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. from Memphis, Tennessee.
