ROME -- The Lady Hawks made it two in a row Friday night, topping West Alabama 3-0. The win marks the seventh time this season Shorter has earned the win in three sets, and kept the team's record perfect at the Winthrop-King Centre this year.
Shorter improves to 13-1 overall and 8-1 in the Gulf South Conference; while the Tigers slip to 10-5 on the season and 3-3 in conference play.
West Alabama kept things close, leading in each set, to make the Lady Hawks work for the win. Set scores were 25-23, 25-18, and 26-24 respectively.
Shorter hit .175 on the night; while the Tigers tallied a .127 hitting percentage in the loss. The Lady Hawks led with five aces for the match; whereas, West Alabama tallied 10 blocks.
Elizabeth Dowd and
Tiffani Estep led the attack for Shorter with 13 and 11 kills, respectively. Dowd and
Alli Bell each finished with two aces apiece; while Bell posted 20 assists and
Cheyenne Frady led with 22.
On defense,
Cheyenne McLemore led with a team high 16 digs on the night, and Dowd completed the double-double with 14 in the win. Bell just missed double-figures in digs with nine. At the net Estep and
Kelsi Jones each had two blocks on the night.
West Alabama was led offensively by Brianna Sandifer's 17 kills and Callie Murphy's 28 assists. While on defense three Tigers finished with more than ten digs with Abby Ames leading with 15. Jamie Lancellot posted a game high 7 blocks.
Shorter will look to stay in the win column as they wrap up the first half of the season next Thursday, October 6, when they travel to longtime rival Lee University for a 7:00pm start.
