Lady Hawks earn 10th straight win

ROME -- Shorter kept its win streak intact Tuesday evening, topping GSC-foe Union 3-0 in front of the home crowd at the Winthrop-King Centre.

The win improves the Lady Hawks to 10-0 on the season and 5-0 in conference play; while the Lady Bulldogs move to 4-7 overall and 1-2 in the GSC.

Against Union, the Lady Hawks easily took the first two sets; behind scores of 25-11 and 25-16, respectively. But, in the third set, the Lady Bulldogs put up a fight. Union took the lead early in the set on 5 straight points to make it a 7-3 score, before Shorter tallied a 10-1 run of their own to make it a 13-8 game. The Lady Bulldogs then worked to tie the score 14-all on a 5-1 run of their own. Late into the set, the teams traded points and tie scores, until the Lady Hawks closed out the game on back-to-back kills from Kelsi Jones and Lauren Meyer to give Shorter the 30-28 win.

In the end, Elizabeth Dowd led the attack for the home team; tallying nine kills on the night; while Madeline Munroe and Tiffani Estep each added seven in the win. Shorter tallied 10 total aces on the night with Hannah Flack leading the effort from the service line with four; Cheyenne McLemore added two for the Lady Hawks. Cheyenne Frady led the effort in assists with 19 and Alli Bell added 12.

On defense, McLemore turned in a team high 10 digs; while Dowd added nine and Frady chipped in with seven. Shorter finished the night with two blocks; Alicia McClellan recorded one solo and Estep and Dowd teamed up for the other.

For Union, Cecily Blanchard and Abby Schebel finished the night with five kills each, and Audrey Cagle posted a team high in digs with eight.

Entering this week, the Lady Hawks were one of nine undefeated teams remaining in NCAA DII, and as of Wednesday only seven remain as Fort Hays and Lander have suffered losses so far. Shorter will look to keep the streak going this weekend as they travel to Valdosta State and No. 23 West Florida for two tough GSC matchups Friday and Saturday, respectively.
