Shorter volleyball opened the season on a high note; sweeping the first matches of the season , 3-0, over Lincoln Memorial and Newberry.
Against the Railsplitters the Lady Hawks earned the win with set scores of 25-19, 25-19, 25-20; while hitting .300 as a team compared to .110 by Lincoln Memorial. And, against the Wolves, Shorter tallied 25-14, 25-16, 25-21 set wins; while outhitting Newberry .221 to .081.
Top open the season, Shorter tallied 54 kills and 8 blocks against LMU.
Elizabeth Dowd led the attack with 15 kills; while
Madeline Munroe and
Tiffani Estep added 12 apiece. And, at the net,
Alicia McClellan and
Hannah Flack had a hand in four blocks each.
Cheyenne McLemore posted 18 digs in the match to lead the defense. Dowd and
Cheyenne Frady each added 12 digs for Shorter. Frady also posted a team high 28 assists, and Allie Bell chipped in with 19.
The Railsplitters had five players finish in double figures in digs for the morning, while Keira Holland posting a team high in kills with 7. Abby Cash finished the game with a match high 29 assists.
Not only did the Lady Hawks keep the momentum going on attack against Newberry, but picked things up considerably on at the service line; turning in nine aces against the Wolves. Frady led the effort with three; while Dowd and Flack added two, and Bell and
Annie Homan added one each.
On attack Estep led the effort from Shorter with 10 kills in the game and was the lone Lady Hawk to reach double figures in the category. McLemore paced the Shorter defense with 20 digs; while Frady and Dowd added 14. Estep also had a hand in three of the Lady Hawks six blocks.
Madison Darby McClure tallied a team high in kills for Newberry with 8; while Logan Heyward and Kensley Jordan turned in 17 digs each. And, Maggie Marsh had a match high 21 assists.
Shorter will be back in action Saturday with two games. The first at 10:00am against UVA-Wise and the second against Montevallo at 3:00pm.
