The Lady Hawks perfect start remained in tack Saturday as they topped both, UVA-Wise and Montevallo to close out play at the King University Invitational. Shorter opened the day with a 3-1 win over UVA-Wise; before closing out the afternoon with a five set affair with Montevallo, earning the win 3-2.
Against UVA-Wise, the Lady Hawks needed four sets. After taking a 1-0 lead, winning the first 25-23, the Cavaliers came back to win set two 25-23. Before the Lady Hawks shut things down with a 25-7 win in the third set, and a 25-22 win in the final set. Shorter hit .287 for the match with 56 kills, 10 service aces and 8 blocks. While, the Cavs posted a .107 day hitting with 35 kills, an ace and seven blocks.
Elizabeth Dowd led the Lady Hawks with 12 kills in the match to go along with 9 digs. While,
Tiffani Estep added nine kills and had a hand in 2 bocks.
Hannah Flack held firm at the net, tallying five blocks in the match – all assisted – with three aces.
Cheyenne McLemore finished the match with a team high 11 digs, while
Cheyenne Frady tallied 25 assists along with a match high four aces.
Alli Bell chipped in with 16 assists.
UVA-Wise was led by Karley Allen's 18 kills and 14 digs.
To close out the afternoon, Montevallo proved to be a tough opponent taking the match to five sets when they won in the fourth 25-20 to tie things up. The Falcons took the first set 25-23, before the Lady Hawks tallied back to back wins in the second and third, 25-12, 25-20, respectively, and took the match with a 16-14 win in the fifth.
Shorter hit .250 in the match with 58 kills and 14 blocks; while Montevallo posted a .174 hitting percentage with 60 kills and 8 blocks. The Lady Hawks also added 7 aces in the match to finish the weekend with 26.
Dowd once again led the way for Shorter with 18 kills and 15 digs for the match; while
Madeline Munroe posted 16 kills and an ace. Frady turned in three aces for the afternoon to finish with 10 on the weekend, she also added 23 assists. Bell dished out 18 assists for the match.
On the receiving end, McLemore turned in 12 digs and Frady added 11. While at the net, Flack and Estep each finished with five blocks – all assisted – and
BreAnna Thompson added four and
Alicia McClellan chipped in on three.
Kristy Bohan turned in 20 kills for Montevallo; while Hannah Christie added 37 assists and Grace Harris recorded 19 digs.
On the weekend, Dowd turned in 53 kills - hitting .259 - with two aces, three assists, 50 digs and a block in route to All-Tournament honors.
Shorter will be back in action Tuesday, September 6, when they host Tuskegee in the home opener at Winthop-King beginning at 7:00pm. Â
