Hawks fall to Catawba, 10-8

ROME -- The Hawks fell to Catawba College 10-8 at home Saturday afternoon.

After falling behind 3-0 in the first quarter, Shorter came back in the second to cut the lead. Matt Kristiansen opened the quarter with back-to-back goals to bring the Hawks to within one. Only to have the Indians tally back-to-back goals of their own to make it a 5-2 game, before Alex Malinowski answered for Shorter with a score to make it a 5-3 game going into halftime.

After the break, Shorter took the lead; scoring three consecutive goals to take a 6-5 advantage with 8:23 to play in the third quarter. Andrew King got things started with a goal the 13:54 mark in the quarter, and Aswan Bland followed moments later to tie the game, before Malinowski gave the Hawks the lead. But, Catawba answered with consecutive scores in the final minutes of the frame to make it a 7-6 game in the Indians' favor heading into the final fifteen minutes.

Jack Currier opened the fourth period with a goal for the Hawks to tie the game. Catawba added three goals to take a 9-7 advantage with 5:56 to play, before Kristiansen tallied a final goal for Shorter and Dalton Cook posted a final goal for the Indians for the 10-8 final score.

Catawba held a narrow advantage in shots 34-36 and in ground balls 22-21; while also winning 14 of 22 draws.

Kristiansen led the Hawks with three goals on the afternoon. While, Colin Doyle posted four caused turnovers and Joshua Skinner tallied a team high six ground balls. Garry Robinson turned in 12 saves in goal for Shorter.

The Hawks will be back in action next Saturday, April 16, as they welcome Young Harris College to Ben Brady Field.
