ROME --Â The Hawks used a late run to take the game from Young Harris 13-11 Saturday afternoon at Ben Brady Field.
Shorter improves to 6-7 on the season; while the Mountain Lions move to 10-5 overall.
Young Harris jumped out to the early lead; scoring the game's first three goals. But the Hawks answered as
Tyler Kristiansen and
Matt Kristiansen went back-to-back to cut the lead to 3-2 with 1:33 to play in the opening quarter. The Mountain Lions added a final goal before time ran out in the frame to go to the second quarter up 4-2.
In the second period both teams added two goals to make it a 6-4 game at the break. Both of Young Harris' goals came from Jayden Campbell; while the Hawks had scores from
Zachery Dirkse and
James VandenBrink at 4:26 and 2:45, respectively.
Shorter rallied in the third quarter, scoring three times to take the lead. The frame remained scoreless for most of the fifteen minutes, with all three of the Hawks goals coming in the final minute of the quarter. T. Kristiansen tallied back-to-back goals on assists from M. Kristiansen and
Aswan Bland to tie the game with twenty seconds to play; before M. Kristiansen found the back of the net with twelve second remaining to give Shorter the lead 7-6.
In the final quarter both teams made up for the lack of offense in the third as the Hawks added six goals and Mountain Lions tallied five for the 13-11 final score. Chandler Bradley opened the scoring for Young Harris, tying the game with 12:37 to play. Only to have M. Kristiansen and Dirkse turn in consecutive goals to make it a 9-7 game with 9:08 remaining. The Mountain Lions quickly responded with two goals of their own to tie things up once again. But the Hawks pushed through, turning in a 4-2 run to close out the game. With 5:28 to go
Alex Malinowski netted his first goal of the day and was followed by M. Kristiansen with his fourth of the afternoon; before Dirkse and
Aswan Bland went back-to-back to make it a 13-9 game with 1:07 to play. Young Harris added two final goals in the final minute for the 13-11 score.
In total, the Hawks outshot the Mountain Lions 40-35, and held a slim 27-26 advantage in shots on goal. Young Harris led in ground balls 28-26, and in face-off wins 13-12.
Individually, M. Kristiansen finished with four goals; while T. Kristiansen and Dirkse recorded 3 each.
Joshua Skinner was 11-23 on face-offs and collected 8 ground balls. While
Michael Williams caused two turnovers and
Garry Robinson finished with 15 saves in the game.
Shorter will close out the season next Saturday, April 23, as they welcome Alabama Huntsville to Ben Brady Field for a 1:00pm start. Â
