ROME --Â The Hawks closed out the season on a high note, topping the Chargers of Alabama Huntsville 24-8 Saturday afternoon at Ben Brady Field.
With the win, Shorter finishes the season with a 7-7 record; while the Chargers will enter their final game of the year next week with a 3-8 overall mark.
The Hawks got on the board first, scoring back-to-back goals from
Jack Currier and
Andrew King on assists from
Alex Malinowski and
Tyler Kristiansen, respectively, to take a 2-0 lead in the opening minutes of the game. UAH tallied its goal of the afternoon with 10:56 to play to cut the lead in half, but Shorter answered with a 3-1 run to take a 5-2 lead into the second period. Malinowski got it going with his first goal of the day with 8:33 remaining, before Colin Wilcox countered for the Chargers, and
Matt Kristiansen followed with back-to-back goals for Shorter to close out the quarter.
Zachery Dirkse made it a four point game nine seconds into the second period when he found the back of the net for the first time in the game; only to have UAH tally four consecutive goals to tie the game at six with 3:21 to play in the half. King and M. Kristiansen added a goal apiece in the final minutes to give for Shorter an 8-6 lead at the break.
The Hawks pulled away in the third quarter, opening the frame with five goals in the first two and a half minutes. Dirkse started the run with a score seconds in to the period and was followed almost immediately by M. Kristiansen to make it a 10-6 game.
Aswan Bland added a score of his own with 13:41 to play and Dirkse turned in a third score of the afternoon with 13:24 to go, before Malinowski found the back of the net on a pass from M. Kristiansen with 12:42 remaining to bring Shorter's advantage to 13-6. The Chargers halted the run by Hawks with back-to-back goals to make it a 13-8 game, but that was as close as they'd get for the remainder of the period as Shorter posted a 5-0 run to close the quarter with an 18-8 advantage – three goals from M. Kristiansen, and one apiece from Bland and Malinowski.
The scoring continued for the Hawks in the final fifteen minutes with six more goals for the 24-8 final score. M. Kristiansen opened the scoring, and was followed by Malinowski, before adding a ninth and final goal of the afternoon with 9:47 to play.
Matt McHugh got in on the scoring moments later to make it a 22-8 score.
James VandenBrink tallied a score for Shorter with 5:24 to go and McHugh added a second goal with 1:40 to play for the 24-8 final score.
On the day, Shorter outshot the Chargers 77-26, and held a 40-15 advantage in shots on goal. While also leading in ground balls 37-29 and winning 22 of 35 face-offs.
Individually, the Hawks were led by M. Kristiansen; who turned in 9 goals and 4 assists on the day. While, Malinowski finished with 4 goals and 4 assists.
Joshua Skinner won 18-27 face-offs and collected 14 ground balls. On defense,
Michael Williams posted a season high 10 caused turnovers on the day to go along with 5 ground balls.
Garry Robinson made 7 saves in goal for Shorter.
On the season, M. Kristiansen led the Hawks with 66 goals and 14 assists. While Skinner won 156 face-offs and collected 108 ground balls and Williams posted a team high 32 caused turnovers. And, Robinson finished with 168 saves on the year. Â Â
