PENSACOLA, Fla. -- The Hawks dropped the final game of the Gulf South Conference baseball series to the 11
th ranked West Florida Argonauts, 12-2.
Shorter registered four hits on the day, with half coming in the opening inning. The Hawks scored one of their two runs in the top of the first when
Blaze Vazquez's RBI-single scored
Dustin Lawson.
Although SU held a 1-0 advantage, the Argonauts answered with 10 runs over the game's first six innings.
Vazquez accounted for the Hawks second and final run of the game when he homered to left field in the top of the seventh. West Florida added two more runs in the bottom of the inning and defeated Shorter, 12-2.
In addition to Vazquez, Lawson and
Austin Miller also recorded hits for the Hawks.
Michael Weiksner received the loss, giving up four earned runs on four hits. Four pitchers –
Micah Wyatt,
Mason Long,
Patrick Busscher, and
Tyler Cates – all made relief appearances for Shorter.
J.T. Granat earned the win for UWF, pitching 5.2 innings.
The Hawks are now 13-32 overall, with a 6-24 record in GSC play. With the win and series sweep, the Argonauts improved to 31-13 and 23-7 in Gulf South Conference play.
Shorter welcomes Emmanuel College to Rome on Tuesday for a non-conference matchup. First pitch between the Hawks and Lions is set for 1 PM EST.
