ROME, Ga. -- The Hawks used 14 hits to defeat the Emmanuel College Lions, 13-9, avenging a loss that happened less than two weeks ago.
Dustin Lawson and
Patrick Sanderson each collected three RBIs to lead Shorter, while a trio of players –
Greg Gladden,
Steven Maier, and
Blaze Vazquez – collected two RBIs each.
Early in the contest, the Hawks trailed by four runs, but a two-RBI homer by Maier cut the deficit in half, pulling Shorter within two, 4-2.
Emmanuel stretched its lead to 7-2, but a five-run fourth inning allowed SU to tie the contest. The Hawks scored their first run of the inning when
Jerry Liang stole home as part of a double steal. Sanderson followed with a two-RBI single, before Lawson's two-RBI double to center field plated the final two Shorter runs of the inning and tied the game at seven.
Shorter took the lead for good in the sixth inning. Gladden and Lawson both recorded singles, with Gladden batting Maier and
Jacob Ramos, and Lawson plating Sanderson.
After six, the Hawks led 10-7. Emmanuel scored two runs in the top of the seventh, making the score 10-9 in favor of Shorter. In the bottom of the inning, Sanderson hit an RBI-double to give the Hawks an 11-9 advantage. Vazquez put the exclamation point on things with a two-run homer in the eighth, and Shorter won by a final score of 13-9.
Four different pitchers saw action for the Hawks, with
Michael Weiksner receiving the win. Weiksner pitched 2.2 innings in relief and gave up one earned run. The Lions Ethan Thornton received the loss.
The win helps Shorter improve to 14-32 overall, while Emmanuel drops to 8-39 on the season.
The Hawks return to action on Saturday against Gulf South Conference opponent Christian Brothers. First pitch of the double header between CBU and Shorter is set for 12 noon EST from Rome, Georgia.
