Baseball drops two at No. 11 West Florida

Pensacola, Fla. -- The Hawks dropped a pair of Gulf South Conference games to No. 11 West Florida Saturday afternoon in Pensacola; falling in the opener 10-2, and in the finale 9-6.

Shorter slips to 13-30 on the season and 6-23 in conference play; while the Argos improve to 29-13 overall and 22-7 in the GSC.

The Hawks scored first in game one; tallying two runs in the top of the first to take a 2-0 lead as Dustin Lawson delivered an RBI double to left field to plate Brian Cabrera, who singled to lead off the game. One batter later, Blaze Vazquez brought in Raul Cortes on a sacrifice fly to center field for the 2-0 score.

From there West Florida began chipping away; scoring one in the first to cut the lead in half, and tying the game in the second on a solo homerun from Nick Kerkmann; before tacking on eight unanswered runs for the 10-2 score.

Patrick Sanderson finished with two hits in the game; while Vazquez and Lawson recorded a hit and an RBI.

Jacob Farmer took the loss, allowing six runs on six hits through 4.2 innings of work.

Shorter, again, scored first in game two; this time taking a 3-0 lead in the first inning as Lawson and Greg Gladden delivered RBI hits. Only to have the Argos cut the lead to one in the bottom of the inning on a two run homer from Nic Strasser.

The Hawks extended their lead in the third with three runs. Cabrera led off the inning with a single, and moved to third on a double to Lawson; both then scored on a 2 RBI double from Vazquez. With one out, Gladden singled to move Vazquez to third, before Cortes delivered a bunt to bring him in.

West Florida capitalized on four hits and two Shorter errors to add six runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead for good, 8-6, and added a final run in the fourth for the 9-6 final score.

Cabrera, Lawson and Gladden each tallied two hits apiece in game two; while Vazquez and Gladden each added two RBI.

Busscher took the loss, allowing three runs on three hits with a walk in a third of an inning.

Shorter will look to avoid the sweep Sunday. Game time is set for 2:00pm EST from Pensacola.
