ROME -- The Hawks stayed in the win column Saturday afternoon – winning their third straight game – with a 10-4 victory over North Greenville University.
Shorter improves to 5-6 on the season; while the Crusaders slip to 4-8 overall.
Tyler Kristiansen got the scoring started for the Hawks, netting a pass from his brother,
Matt Kristiansen, in the opening minutes of the game to give Shorter a 1-0 lead and spark a 7-0 run by the Hawks to pull away. After the goal from T. Kristiansen,
Alex Malinowski followed second later with his first of the day on a feed from
Chris Woodard, and then assisted on M. Kristiansen's first score of the day two minutes later in the man-up situation. Malinowski and M. Kristiansen then went back-to-back again to extend the Hawks lead to 5-0 with 6:39 to go in the first quarter.
James Vandenbrink made it 7-0 with back-to-back scores with 5:31 to play in the first, and with 12:56 to go in the second, respectively. Before North Greenville halted the run; tallying their first goal of the afternoon with 3:53 to play in the opening half, making it a 7-1 game at the break.
The Crusaders scored twice in the third period to cut the lead to four, 7-3, only to have the Hawks turn in a 3-1 run to close out the game. M. Kristiansen posted consecutive goals to end the third quarter and begin the fourth, while
Matt McHugh turned in his second goal of the season and second in as many games to make it a 10-4 game with 9:43 to play. Drew Warren added North Greenville's final goal of the contest with 6:42 remaining for the 10-5 score.
In the end, the Hawks outshot the Crusaders 36-22 and held a 22-12 advantage in shots on goal. While, North Greenville led in ground balls 23-17 and in face-offs 10-7.
Individually, M. Kristiansen led the attack for Shorter with four goals and an assist, while Malinowski added two goals and two assists in the game. Shorter goalie,
Garry Robinson, finished with eight saves in the game; while
Michael Santry caused two turnovers for the Hawks.
Shorter will be back in action next Saturday, April 9, as they welcome Catawba College to Ben Brady Field for a 2:00pm start.
