Baseball Drops Two Games at West Georgia

CARROLLTON, Ga. – The Shorter Hawks dropped two games on the road to the West Georgia Wolves, 5-1, and 9-1.

In the opening game of the series, neither team managed a run over the first three innings, before the Wolves scored in the bottom of the fourth to take a 1-0 lead over Shorter. West Georgia added three runs the following inning. The Wolves scored their first run via a balk before Artemis Kadkhodaian's two-RBI double plated runs three and four.

The Hawks scored their only run of game one in the top of the seventh inning. Back-to-back singles by Ty Cherry and Jerry Liang gave Shorter runners on first and second with no outs. Both runners advanced a base on a wild pitch, before Jacob Ramos walked, loading the bases. Brian Cabrera's single scored Cherry as the Hawks pulled within three runs.

West Georgia answered back in the bottom of the seventh, scoring a single run to push its lead to 5-1, where it stayed for the remainder of the game.

Shorter's Jacob Farmer took the loss, giving up four runs over five innings. Farmer struck out four batters and walked five. Brandon Goldsmith received the win for the Wolves.

Game two did not go any better for the visiting Hawks, as they fell to the Wolves, 9-1.

Shorter (11-21, 5-15) got on the board in the top of the first, but was held scoreless for the rest of game. In the opening inning, Cabrera reached first safely thanks to a West Georgia (21-10, 11-9) throwing error, and Dustin Lawson followed with a single through the right side of the infield. With two outs, Blaze Vazquez knocked in Cabrera with a single, giving the Hawks a 1-0 lead.

The Wolves tied the game in the bottom of the second, before adding two runs in the fourth inning for a 3-1 lead. A sacrifice fly pushed West Georgia's lead to 4-1 before the home team broke things open in the bottom of the sixth, scoring five runs on five hits – including three singles, a double and a triple.

When it was all said and done, the Hawks dropped the second game to the Wolves, 9-1.

Tyler Cates received the loss for SU, pitching four innings. He surrendered four hits and gave up three earned runs. UWG's Matthew Norton earned the win, pitching a complete game.

The two teams play the final game of the series tomorrow afternoon. First pitch is set for 2 PM EST from Cole Field in Carrollton, Ga.
