CARROLLTON, Ga. - Despite using a two run third inning to take the lead, the Shorter Hawks could not hold on and lost, 5-3, to the West Georgia Wolves.
With no outs in the top of the third and
Brian Cabrera on second,
Raul Cortes homered to give the Hawks a 3-1 lead.
West Georgia answered during its half of the third. Back-to-back wild pitches by the Hawks allowed the Wolves to plate one run, before an RBI groundout by UWG's Chase Waters scored the home team's second run of the inning, tying the game at three.
A two-run home run by West Georgia's Caleb Lopez in the bottom of the fifth proved to be the difference. Lopez's homer put the Wolves ahead for good, 5-3.
Jacob Ramos took the loss for Shorter, pitching 5.2 innings. The right-handed freshman gave up two earned runs on two hits. He walked three batters and struck out one. West Georgia's Josh Morgan earned the win.
The loss drops the Hawks record to 11-22 overall (5-17 Gulf South Conference) while West Georgia improves to 22-10 (12-9 GSC) by virtue of completing the sweep of Shorter.
The Hawks will look to turn things around when they travel to Carson-Newman on Wednesday. First pitch will take place at 3 PM EST in Jefferson City, Tennessee.
