West Alabama Shuts Out Baseball

LIVINGSTON, Ala. -- The Hawks baseball team dropped the final game of the three game series against the #25 West Alabama Tigers, 8-0.

UWA completed the sweep of Shorter, shutting out the Hawks for the second game in a row.

The Tigers scored eight runs on as many hits. They took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second when Luigi Mendez stole home and lead 3-0 after three innings.

Shorter (13-28, 6-21 GSC) threatened in the top of the fourth, loading the bases with one out as Blaze Vazquez, Raul Cortes, and Jerry Liang all singled. Despite have three runners on, the Hawks could not push across any runs. The Tigers (30-11, 19-8 GSC) scored twice in their half of the inning, pushing their advantage over Shorter to five runs.

West Alabama scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth when Mitch Holgate hit a three-RBI homer to give his squad an 8-0 lead.

Trailing by eight, the Hawks could not muster a comeback and fell to the Tigers for the third time in as many games.

Shorter collected ten hits, with Vazquez going a perfect three for three at the plate.

Five different pitchers saw action for Shorter. Starter Nate Bock received the loss, pitching 1.1 innings. He struck out one and walked two. UWA's Josh Jones struck out nine and earned the victory.

Shorter returns to action on Wednesday against Southern Wesleyan University. First pitch is set for 6 PM EST from Central, South Carolina.
