Franklin Springs, Ga. -- The Hawks made it two in a row Tuesday night, topping the Lions of Emmanuel College 22-8 in their final road game of the season.
Shorter improves to 4-6 on the season; while Emmanuel slips to 1-10.
The Hawks opened the game with a 3-0 run to pull away from the Lions as
Jack Currier,
James VandenBrink and
Matt Kristiansen tallied consecutive goals. Before Emmanuel answered with a score of their own with 5:41 to play in the first quarter, but Shorter answered with four more goals in the frame to take a 7-1 lead into the second quarter with goals from
Zachery Dirkse,
Tyler Kristiansen and two from
Alex Malinowski.
In the second period the Hawks tacked on four goals while holding the Lions to one to take an 11-2 lead into halftime. M. Kristiansen got things started with his second goal of the day in the opening seconds of the quarter. Then Emmanuel answered with a goal of their own, before Shorter closed out the quarter with scores from
Joshua Skinner, M. Kristiansen, and
Matt McHugh – his first of the season.
Emmanuel tallied a goal to start things off after the break to make it an 11-3 game before the Hawks used a 5-2 run to extend their lead going into the final period. Malinowski sparked the run with a score at the 11:43 mark and was followed seconds later by
Darchele Farley – who also posted his first goal of the season. The Lions halted the run, momentarily, with two scores, but Shorter countered with three to keep the momentum as
Chad Halili,
Jon Paul and Malinowski found the back of the net at the 8:52, 3:35, and 2:13 marks, respectively.
Shorter scored six times in the final fifteen minutes; while holding the Lions to three goals for the 22-8 final score. Dirkse bookended the scoring for the Hawks tallying the first of the frame with 13:55 to play and the last for Shorter with 3:18 to go, in between, Malinowski added three and M. Kristiansen chipped in with one.
In total, the Hawks outshot the Lions 62-28 and held a 32-15 advantage in shots on goal. While winning 23 of 34 face-offs and collecting 26 ground balls to Emmanuel's 22.
Individually, Malinowski lead the offense for Shorter; finishing with a game and season high seven goals. Skinner posted a team high 10 ground balls, while also going 15-25 in face-offs. And, Malinowski, M. Kristiansen and
Morgan DeNoers each added two caused turnover apiece. In goal for Shorter,
Garry Robinson turned in seven saves on the night.
Shorter will return to action, and Ben Brady Field, Saturday at 2:00pm when North Greenville visits Rome.
