ROME, Ga. -
Jacob Ramos pitched six innings of one-hit baseball in relief, as the Hawks narrowly defeated the Alabama Huntsville Chargers, 3-2.
Ramos entered the game in the fourth inning, with the game tied. The only hit he surrendered came that same inning. "He singlehandedly gave us a shot to win," head coach
Wes Timmons stated.
Shorter's first run of the contest came in the opening inning when
Dustin Lawson scored as
Greg Gladden was caught stealing. The Chargers (19-12, 11-7) scored two runs in the top of the second to take a brief, 2-1 lead, but the Hawks (11-19, 5-13) tied the contest in the bottom of the third inning.
After reaching base via a one out walk, Lawson advanced to second on a fielder's choice.
Patrick Sanderson then reached on an error by UAH's Austin Sanders, which allowed Lawson to score, tying the game at two. Â
The Hawks scored what would become the game winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning. With one out,
Raul Cortes' rbi-double scored Gladden, putting Shorter ahead for good.
Ramos got out of a jam in the bottom of the eighth inning before retiring the side in order in the ninth. "Getting out of the jam helped my confidence a lot," said Ramos. "It's always a huge momentum builder."
With the win, Ramos improves to 3-1 on the season, while Shorter is now 11-19 overall and 5-13 in Gulf South Conference action.
The Hawks return to play on Friday as they hit the road to take on GSC opponent West Georgia. First pitch of the double header is set for 2 PM EST from Carrollton, GA.
