Hawks Drop Home Opener

Troublesome late innings cost the Shorter Hawks, as the team dropped its home opener to the Carson-Newman Eagles, 6-3.

Seven pitchers made appearances on the mound for Shorter with Patrick Busscher getting the starting nod and pitching one inning. Micah Wyatt spent the longest amount of time on the mound, throwing three innings.

The contest remained scoreless for the first three innings before each squad managed a run in the fourth. Carson Newman's Eric Lynch grounded out to Hawk shortstop Patrick Sanderson, but Paul Kirby scored on the play, allowing the Eagles to take a 1-0 led. In the bottom of the fourth, Shorter's Blaze Vazquez hit a solo home run to left center field, tying the game at one.

As the game reached its late stages, things went downhill for the home team. Carson Newman (1-4) managed one run in the top of the seventh inning thanks to a solo home run off the bat of Brandon Roberts. In the eighth, the Eagles pushed across three more runs. Lynch once again batted in Kirby, this time on a sacrifice fly. A pair of doubles by Jimmy Rice and Greg Jones scored two more Carson Newman runners, stretching the Eagles advantage to four runs, 5-1.

Shorter (1-3) failed to score in the bottom of the eighth and faced a four-run deficit heading into the ninth. Carson Newman tacked on another run as Austin Kearney scored on a balk. Down five entering the bottom of the ninth, the Hawks made a comeback. With two outs and Vazquez on second base, Sanderson homered to make the score 6-3. "He has really worked on his swing and his approach. Right now, he is seeing the fruits of that labor," said head coach Wes Timmons.

Unfortunately, after Sanderson's home run the Hawks failed to do more damage as the game ended when Jerry Liang flied out to right field.

Jacob Farmer took the loss for Shorter, giving up one run. Carson Newman's Robert Eberle earned the win, pitching a complete game. He recorded six strikeouts, while giving up three earned runs and seven hits.

The Hawks will attempt to return to the win column on Friday when LeMoyne-Owen College visits the Ledbetter Baseball Complex. First pitch of the double header is set for 12 noon EST.
