Dustin Lawson collected five RBIs as the Shorter Hawks defeated the LeMoyne-Owen College Magicians in a double-header, 4-1 and 13-1.
In game one, the Magicians struck first when Robert Sheard grounded out to Patrick Sanderson, scoring Anthony Owen on the play. In the Shorter half of the fifth inning, Lawson grounded out but batted in Sanderson. The Hawks scored three more runs in the bottom of the sixth. Blaze Vazquez singled to left field, and Raul Cortez scored. Sean Avecedo reached on a Magician error, advancing to second base on the play. With runners on second and third, Lawson doubled, allowing the two runners to cross the plate, giving the Hawks a 4-1 advantage. Neither team managed more runs as Jerry Liang struck out two in the top of the seventh inning, sealing the win for the Hawks.
Liang earned the win for Shorter by going the distance. He gave up one earned run on three hits. The sophomore ace struck out eight batters and improved his record to 1-1. Dexwin Thompson was credited with the loss. Thompson pitched 5.1 innings and surrendered four earned runs.
The bats came alive for SU in the second game. "We had competitive at bats from start to finish," said head coach Wes Timmons. The Hawks defeated LeMoyne-Owen 13-1 thanks to ten runs over the first two innings.
Ty Cherry put the Hawks on the board with a two RBI double in the bottom of the first. Lawson immediately followed Cherry with a single, scoring two more base runners and extending Shorter's lead to 4-0. In the next inning, the Hawks managed six runs. Cabrera batted in Mason Long on a groundout, and Jerry Liang scored on a wild pitch. With a 6-0 advantage, Vazquez homered, batting in a pair of runs. Two more Hawks – Acevedo and Lawson – managed RBIs, giving Shorter an astounding 10-0 lead.
Shorter gave LeMoyne Owen its lone run of game two in the fourth inning when Tyrone Gaston singled to left-center field, scoring Robert Sheard. The Hawks countered with three more runs of their own thanks to two RBIs from Sanderson and one from Acevedo. After the Magicians batted in the top of the fifth, the game was called, as Shorter was ahead 13-1.
Jacob Ramos received the win in game two for the Hawks, surrendering one run on one hit, while striking out six. Ulric Johnson took the loss for LeMoyne-Owen, giving up eight earned runs in 1.1 innings.
Shorter returns to the field tomorrow, February 12, when it plays two more games against the Magicians. First pitch of the double header is set for 12 noon EST from Rome, Ga.
