ROME -- The offensive struggles continued for the Hawks Saturday afternoon as they fell to Mississippi College 32-0 in the final home game of the season.
The Choctaws (3-6, 1-6 GSC) got off to a quick start against Shorter, returning the opening kick-off 93 yards for a touchdown take an early 6-0 lead. And, added to it midway through the opening frame to extend the lead to 12-0, before tacking on fourteen more before halftime, to take a 26-0 lead into the break.
The Hawks (0-10, 0-7 GSC) had an opportunity to cut into the lead in the second quarter as
Austin Miller caught an 11-yard pass from
Devante James in the end zone, but the score was called back on a penalty that moved the Hawks back to the MC 16. The Hawks then saw three more attempts come up short, opting for a field goal try instead. But, Shorter would be denied a score as
Brady Hammel's kick went wide to the left.
After halftime, Mississippi College added a final touchdown, in the third quarter, for the 32-0 score.
On the afternoon, James passed for 59 yards on seven completions; while
Mason Long added 46 yards on five completions.
Alex McGhee led in rushing with 49 yards on 15 carries.
Demerious Owensby and
Dante Borders added 20 and 17 yards, respectively.
Maurice Sutton led the Hawks on the receiving end, tallying 45 yards on three catches; while McGhee added an additional 45 yards on two receptions. Miller turned in 14 yards on the after, on two catches.
On defense,
Jevaris Jones led the Hawks with 11 tackles in the game, for his fifth game with 10 or more tackles. He also added two tackles for a loss and a sack.
Rodney Jackson chipped in with eight tackles on the game, and
Kevin Knight recorded seven. While, Howards Stephens added five tackles with three for a loss and two tackles.
Willy Dorcin also finished with five tackles and an interception.
The Hawks will close out the season next week, November 12, as they travel to Valdosta State for a 7:00pm start.
