Taylor Adams recorded her second straight double-double, but the Lady Hawks fell to Clark Atlanta 69-61.
The game was Shorter's 20th annual Breast Cancer Awareness Classic and all gate and apparel proceeds were donated to Play4Kay and the Floyd Breast Center.
Clark Atlanta got on the board with a three-pointer, but Adams answered with a layup, making the score 3-2 early in the first. After Adams' field goal, neither team managed to lead to by more than a single point until
Roni Richardson hit a three with 4:28 left in the period.
Shorter led by as many as seven after
Kayla Tillie's layup, but the Panthers cut the deficit to four points heading into the second period.
Clark Atlanta pulled within one, but back-to-back layups by Tillie extended the home team's led to five before the Panthers went on a run of their own. Clark Atlanta chipped away at SU's advantage and eventually took a one-point lead with 3:17 to go in the period.
Over the final three minutes the lead changed four times and the Panthers led by two at the half, 32-30.
The Lady Hawks took a three-point lead thanks to Adams' layup with 5:59 left in the third, but CAU found itself in front just over 60 seconds later.
After Shorter tied the contest at 41, CAU retook the lead and extended its advantage to four points, 48-44.
Denise Newton's free-throw with under 20 seconds remaining in the period made it a one-possession game heading into the final quarter of play.
The Lady Hawks pulled within one-point on two separate occasions in the fourth, but Clark Atlanta began to pull away just after the halfway point in the quarter and took a double-digit lead with 2:55 left in the game.
Shorter's Tillie cut the lead to seven with 1:18 remaining, but the Panthers remained in control, taking the victory, 69-61.
Adams led the Lady Hawks with 25 points and 11 rebounds.
Raven Fair also had a double-double, scoring 13 points while collecting 11 boards. Tillie added 12 points for Shorter. Kiyanna Johnson and Marissa Mandledove led the Panthers with 24 and 23 points respectively.
The Lady Hawks shot 41.5% from the field and made 66.7% of their free throws. Clark Atlanta made 36.1% of its shots and went 17 for 27 from the charity stripe. Shorter held a 10-6 advantage in assists and won the rebounding battle 39-35.
The loss drops the Lady Hawks to 0-3 on the season, while the Panthers improve to 1-1.
Shorter returns to action next Tuesday, November 22, at Clark Atlanta. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. from Atlanta, Georgia.
