Lady Hawks win GSC Regular Season Championship

ROME -- The Lady Hawks secured their second Gulf South Conference regular season championship in three years Saturday afternoon, topping Mississippi College 3-0 in the final regular season game of the year.

Shorter will enter the GSC Tournament, hosted by West Florida November 19-20, with a 22-6 overall record and a 17-3 conference mark, and earn a bye into the semifinals as the 2nd seed. The Argos also finished with a 17-3 conference mark to earn a share in the regular season title and won the tiebreaker to receive hosting responsibilities.

Mississippi College ends its season 10-21 overall and 3-17 in GSC play.

The Choctaws kept things close in each set, getting off to strong starts each time, but the Lady Hawks tallied the wins by stringing together four to five point runs in each. In the opening set, which Shorter won 25-16, the Lady Hawks used a 9-3 run to pull away after MC cut the lead to one, 9-8, and from there the Choctaws wouldn't get any closer than six. In the second set, the Shorter pulled out to a 6-2 lead, but after trading points MC used five straight points to make it 9-8 in their favor. Again the teams traded points, but the Lady Hawks closed out the win with a five point run of their own for the 25-19 victory. And, in the final set, the Choctaws looked to force another set, leading for much of the frame. Down 15-13, Shorter turned in a five point rally to take an 18-15 advantage, and despite MC cutting the lead to one later on, held on for the 25-19 on a second four point run.

Elizabeth Dowd was the lone Lady Hawk to reach double-figures in kills, tallying 11 on the afternoon; while also adding 10 digs and four blocks in the match.

At the service live, Jones led with three aces on the day, to go along with two from Morgan Cleveland; while three other players had one.
